A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
